I knew I needed new ductwork and that I would need to buy a new unit in the next few years. To avoid getting swindled, I decided to get unbiased information from a consultant who would not be selling me equipment. David Brown and ConsultAir came highly recommended and I have not been disappointed. David created Manual J, S and D reports and a duct system layout, with quick replies that include thorough and easy-to-understand answers. As I gathered my first quotes from HVAC contractors, I got pushback on using a consultant’s drawings – some refused, others offered elaborate sales routines and scare tactics to persuade me to use their own drawings and equipment instead. I contacted David with questions about what I was experiencing, and he confirmed my suspicions about one contractor and offered additional guidance so I felt fully armed going into additional quotes.
If you are thinking of doing any kind of heating or cooling in your home don’t take a chance by trusting the local HVAC person. They have one agenda… To sell you an overpriced system and get the job done as quickly as possible. I learned this because I had 5 different bids and 5 different sized systems from each installer. How could this be I wondered? Well…it turns out that there is a real, systemic, and calculated way of finding out how big of a system you need for your home.
There are manuals and load calculations that can be done to properly size your system. After much searching on Google I stumbled upon David Brown and ConsultAir. He was the person I was searching for. He did all the load calculations, the calculations for the ductwork and even offered some very helpful tips along the way. The load calculation that I ordered from ConsultAir confirmed my suspicions… my air conditioner was way too large for my house. I ended up replacing my entire heating and air conditioning system, including the ductwork. By allowing ConsultAir design my new system, I was able to give the local air conditioning contractors all of the information they needed, including “to scale” duct drawings, which allowed me to compare “apples to apples” as I reviewed the different proposals that I received. Since then, my electric bills are lower and the “hot spots” in my house are gone.

Even though he is in Florida and I’m in Washington State, I was confident I had found someone good when local contractors in my area gave him a very positive two thumbs up. David was very courteous and fun to work with, and he was spot on working with me from a technical point of view from clear across the country. Even as a non-HVAC guy I could follow him well, and I never once recalled hearing a word suggesting impatience. The final product is quite reasonably priced and very well laid out for duct installers to follow. I would guess I will save at least $1000 per year or greater by doing this right. Hello, I would like to take a minute to share my experience with David Brown; who did the HVAC design. He did my design 2 years ago and I waited to write a review because I wanted to go throw a season of cooling and heating. After 2years of close examination I want to tell everyone the design is amazing. The house is 96’ long x14’ and I have put 12 temperature sensors in every room and the units cooled and heat the house exactly on the money, degree difference between all the rooms in the house, that alone will tell you how accurate the calculation and design is. I’m extremely happy and the money well spent. I do suggest if you build a house, do not really on the HVAC installers, they are just installing the unit and they are NOT design and calculating your heating and cooling loads. David Brown is amazing person. God bless him and his family.

This was well worth the money. Quick and easy to work with. The heat and air guys wanted me to buy 7 tons and after it was all said and done I only needed 3.5 tons. Was a great service to capitalize all of my energy efficient components of my new house.
ConsultAir did a fantastic job for me as an owner builder. They took time to make certain they understood our house design and personal needs here in Phoenix, and presented system options and rationale for their recommendation. I was able to confidently get bids from HVAC contractors knowing I was not going to be sold an oversized system – several tried. Superior Design and Service
As a design/builder in Dallas/Ft. Worth with a specialty in green construction, I knew I needed an expert to design a system for my own west-facing home. David took a tremendous amount of time designing the most innovative system possible to maximize energy efficiency. My HVAC contractor, who has worked on million-dollar homes for 20 years, said David’s design and hours of assistance totally changed how he will install systems from now on. I cannot recommend David highly enough. He went above and beyond my expectations with his knowledge, professionalism, time commitment and dedication to the project.
While in the process of finishing up a small renovation I was doing on my condominium near Miami, Florida, the local building department notified me that my new and already installed AC system, including ductwork, was not properly installed or permitted. To make matters worse, I soon found out that not only did my AC contractor have some licensing “issues” but that he was also not capable of providing the engineering reports that the inspector was requiring. This is when I contacted ConsultAir.
When I first called ConsultAir, I spoke with the owner, David Brown. I was surprised at the amount of time David took discussing my situation before I had even placed an order. David let me know up front that there was a chance that my newly installed AC system could be larger than the building codes will allow. A few days after placing my order, David confirmed that the system was significantly larger than the building codes will allow and that the only option I had would be to replace it. By this time, David was also pretty familiar with the issues I was having with my AC contractor and so he took it upon himself to help me manage the entire process from start to finish.

My wife and I are average people, living in an average neighborhood, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t have a great HVAC system! After getting 3 quotes from local and national HVAC contractors, it was evident that pushing hardware was their #1 priority…the bigger, the better, for their commission! None of the quotes included duct work design or replacement, nor were the vendors interested in doing the calculations, they just wanted to sell hardware. Our air conditioning equipment was already 15 years old and the duct work original to the house from 1966. David took the time to explain all functions of our HVAC system, their relationship to each other and the pluses and minuses of replacing some or all the parts. We decided to replace everything at the same time. We hired a local contractor to install the HVAC equipment and my wife and I installed the duct work ourselves based on David’s design. The fruits of our labor came when the outside temperature got down to 11 degrees, yet it was very comfortable throughout the house.

I originally asked David for help designing a forced-air heating system, which was finalized and submitted with my building permit application last fall. Approval was a breeze. I recently contracted with ConsultAir to perform a Manual J, S, and D for a custom home i am building (General Contractor). The experience was very positive. I had previously performed a Manual J analysis on an install i did about a year ago, so i have some experience on what to look for. David Brown was very thorough about collecting all the data needed to get the most accurate heat loss, heat gain, equipment and duct sizing. He was particularly good at explaining the various options for fresh air recovery as well as the benefits of single stage, two stage, and modulating equipment.

While building my new house I received the worst HVAC installation I have ever seen. Units not cooling, rain coming through metal roof, water leaking through several ceilings, etc. Seeking help, I found ConsultAir. This company has the kindest, most helpful owner I have ever done business with. He is very passionate about his work and stands behind it. I would not install another air conditioner / heater without contacting ConsultAir first. You might spend $500.00 but it will save you thousands.

Attention to Detail and Service
David took the time to design a system for my home that was better engineered and more efficient than what I would have received from a “design build” HVAC contractor. His scientific approach along with his real world experience is uncommon in the industry. Even after my design was complete David continued to answer questions and provide valuable insight. He is attentive and responsive, two qualities in short supply these days.
My experience with David Brown of Consult Air was very positive and I would highly recommend him and the HVAC sizing and advisory service he provides to anyone. My wife and I just completed building a new home in Flower Mound, TX and I wanted confirmation that our builder’s HVAC contractor was sizing our AC & heating system properly as well as designing the size and configuration of our ducts efficiently. In addition, we were installing spray foam insulation in the attic to increase efficiencies. We contacted David and provided him with a floor plan of our house and all the other information and data he needed, and in return, he supplied us with load calculations for our required AC tonnage, a very efficient duct system design and other valuable information that was very helpful in our dealings with our builder. David’s pricing was very reasonable and he answered follow-up questions without charge. Call him if you want to feel confident you’re getting the HVAC system you need.
I don’t normally write reviews but when I was looking into ConsultAir there were no reviews anywhere so here goes.
I’ll start with the finish, David (owner) did an excellent job on my plans that had a lot to be desired. “Warning” have your plans well drawn up, David will pick through them with a fine tooth comb, he is very picky but you will end up with a heat / cooling load calculation that he is confident in. My house is more energy efficient than most here in the North Woods of Wisconsin and I expect to save over a thousand dollars by going with ConsultAir verses how many square feet most installers would use to size equipment. This part of the review is 5 stars for sure!
Now the reason for 4 stars, for people that have not worked with a small business before you can get lost a bit. I know several small business people and they never turn down work no matter how busy they are just be aware of this and keep on him you’ll be rewarded with an excellent plan that will save you money.
As a side note, It was actually hard for me to give him a 4 star rating but it is truthful. David spent so much time with me because of my bad plans that in the end I felt like it would be great to share a beer or two with him and talk fishing.
David was great to work with. He designed HVAC for a personal residence for us and was very knowledgable, easy to talk to, open to ideas, and good at troubleshooting potentially problematic areas of design, but most of all he was responsive. When we submitted to our local building department, they called for several unnecessary corrections. David’s responses to their concerns caused them to quickly reverse course without further question. Highly recommended.
I contracted with ConsultAir to get my HVAC Manual J, D, and S calculations/report that I needed for my building permit submittal for an addition/remodel, a new requirement by the county. All of the detailed HVAC design work they do is top notch and totally based on your goals for a HVAC system, not what an installer is trying to sell you. Having them provide honest professional opinions makes difficult decisions during construction much clearer and will certainly save you money, in addition to having a HVAC system that performs flawlessly.
ConsultAir was a pleasure to work with and extremely knowledgeable. I had major problems with a split system sweating and put too much time and money trying to fix the problem. We found that since refacing, insulating and doing stucco on the outside of my property along with new impact windows, the load calculations and duct sizing were completely off. He spent his time to help me find the best solution and shared plenty of his knowledge with me. I will definitely use him again and would suggest him to anybody that needs their load calculations properly done.
Very helpful, didn’t try to sell me in any direction, explored all options and walked me through each scenario in order to make the best decision. I highly recommend him on any project. Very knowledgeable on other aspects of construction as well. I needed a HVAC Manual S, J, D to get permits for our South Jersey beach retirement townhouse. Our HVAC contractor was dragging his feet and holding up the whole house renovation. I thought I could buy anything or get any service on the internet. Luckily my Google search led to Dave. I told him my problem of just needing something to give to the city to get my permits. He convinced me that I didn’t want to do a garbage in, garbage out document and compromise a major system of my renovation. Update: we moved in almost 2 years after we gutted the townhouse. We had one of the hottest, most humid summers in south Jersey, and we were very comfortable despite my wife keeping it like a meat locker. No problem keeping the upstairs cool at night, which is not the case with the other townhouses in the community. So happy we found Dave and took the time to do it right.

A man of integrity and ingenuity, filling an extremely necessary modern day void for individuals building their own homes who enjoy learning, yet desire not to cut corners when it comes to whole home systems design/planning. I wish I would have reached out to him in the design phase of our home for HVAC space planning thoughts vs. at the point of install. Our energy bills are very low and our house remains at a desirable temp year round! I am sure David’s service is utilized by a wide variety of customer types, and for many like us he proved an excellent experience. To any customer who is building a new home and seeks to find someone very enjoyable and knowledgeable to work with on HVAC Equipment and Duct design, David is your man. Our position was such that we exclusively needed duct design for a whole home (Multi Zone) Mitsubishi Mini Split system and we were handling install with local relationship. From several hundred miles away our mutual respect for each other was gained quickly in an initial phone call with a punch list of tasks for both us and David, and within a short 10 days to 2 weeks we worked together via Email and Phone with videos, drawings etc. to accomplish what we needed to move forward. He provided us with a very detailed set of calculations and drawings upon completion and made himself available to answer questions (within reason) as we interpreted his deliverable and began our install process. Locally we were not able to find someone who could provide a Design only HVAC service. At first I was nervous about the distance, however with modern day technology I would highly recommend his service to anyone not local. He has a wide range of product/technical install experience also which helped in mutually getting the equipment we so desired, and if things he did not know as well came up (recognizing that the world of equipment and technology is ever changing with an abundance of product vendors), he was quick to communicate with me in a way that motivated me to want to collect the necessary info to report back and problem solve together. He is excellent with time management and made this very clear in our initial phone call, that to stay within his quoted design budget, we needed to follow his lead with requests for necessary data on said deadlines and all would remain on schedule. Best money ever spent on a renovation/design project. David Brown is resourceful, detailed, and informative about the design aspects for an HVAC project. With a little reading, assistance from David, and several weekends of hard work, I now have a phenomenal HVAC system. My house has gone from cold and drafty to a consistent warm in every room. I worked with David to get a design required by my city for my remodel. They require manual S, J, and D reports. None of the local installers wanted to deal with it. David was very responsive and helpful. He did the ducting design to both minimize noise and to have the best esthetics for the style of my house (no huge central returns). So, I’ll start by saying I almost never write reviews. I know I know… it’s a good, neighborly thing to do but for whatever reason, I don’t ever seem to get around to it. That said, with respect to David and ConsultAir, it’s more than warranted. Plainly put, if I could somehow magically reach out to anyone dealing with HVAC issues, I’d tell them this… he is one of the nicest, most helpful, most KNOWLEDGEABLE people I’ve ever met. And, at this point, the thought of installing or overhauling any HVAC system without his input seems ridiculous to me. My wife and I contacted David after (and here comes the all-too-common contractor story) our HVAC contractor installed a system in our house that was more than twice as big as it should have been. Three units powering different zones of the house, all oversized, that led to freezing up and leaking into our ceilings, jet-like air delivery from the vents, wildly varying hot/cold spots, etc. At David’s direction, we took detailed measurements and gave him an overview of what we needed. From minute one, he took an academic approach to our needs the original contractor SHOULD have… calculating the proper loads room by room, studying the layout/functionality of our existing system, and ultimately, reconfiguring/designing a system that worked efficiently. That last point is the most important… for having gone through a full remodel of our house, we’ve learned that designing a NEW system that works well (any type… HVAC, plumbing, etc.) is hard enough. Reconfiguring an EXISTING system to maximize its potential with the lowest additional cost… that’s truly a step above. Because you’re working with something that, oftentimes, is less-than-perfect to begin with. And, in our case… far from it. So, to wrap up what, at this point, has become a novel… we can’t recommend David and ConsultAir highly enough. He saw us through a difficult situation in a way we’ve rarely encountered elsewhere, and if you’re considering any sort of HVAC install… TALK TO HIM FIRST. You won’t regret it.
